
Parliament House ACTUpon formation
of the Commonwealth of Australia, Parliament
initially met in Melbourne. In 1911
the Commonwealth took control of what is now the
Australian Capital Territory. In 1927 the first
Parliament House was opened. It served as the seat of
the Australian Federal Government until May 1988 when
Queen Elizabeth II opened the present Parliament
House. The picture above shows both Houses with the
old one in the foreground from across Lake Burley
Griffin. Both Houses are open to the public. Old
Parliament House is heritage-listed and serves as an
Australian political history museum.
